This image captures a common loon rising from the water in a moment of natural display, wings lifting as droplets fall back into the lake. It’s a behavior I’ve spent a lot of time observing from my kayak, moving quietly through their space and being allowed to witness moments like this without disruption. There’s something powerful about that balance between presence and respect, where you’re close enough to see the detail but still part of the stillness around you.
The phrase “Free Hugs at Camp” adds a bit of humor to a moment that, if you’ve ever spent time around loons, feels pretty accurate. It’s part wild display, part territorial warning, and part reminder that nature doesn’t always mean what we want it to. That contrast is what makes this image fun while still grounded in a real, observed moment.
This is one of my favorite loon images I’ve ever taken. It holds that split second where movement, light, and timing all come together. The water stays calm, the background stays clean, and the bird becomes the entire story.
This image was awarded 1st Place in the Nature category at my camera club’s annual competition, recognizing it as one of the standout wildlife images of the year.
